What Is Masterbatch Manufacturing Process?

As an indispensable carrier of functional additives in the plastics industry, the manufacturing process of masterbatch directly affects the performance and quality of the final plastic products. With the increasing demand for efficient and environmentally friendly production in the industry, the compounding twin-screw extruder has become the core equipment for masterbatch production due to its excellent mixing and dispersion capabilities.

The masterbatch manufacturing process mainly contains these steps: Raw Material Preparation, Mixing, Extrusion, Strand Pelletizing, Cooling and Drying, and Packaging.

Raw Material Preparation:

Matrix Resin Selection: The choice of carrier resin (such as LDPE, PP, PS, etc.) is based on the end application requirements, paying attention to the melt index and polarity compatibility. For example, masterbatches often use LLDPE, which has good compatibility with the substrate, while filled masterbatches may choose high-fluidity HDPE.

Precision Metering of Functional Components: Pigments, fillers (such as calcium carbonate, talc), and functional additives (antioxidants, flame retardants, etc.) can achieve a metering accuracy of ±0.1% through a loss-in-weight feed system, ensuring formula stability.

Mixing:

The raw materials are pre-mixed using a high-speed mixer (500-3000 rpm), which ensures an even distribution of pigments, and additives. The working principle of the high-speed mixer is as follows: all raw materials climb up the inner wall of the mixing vessel under the high-speed rotation of the mixer blades, ascending to a certain height (typically around 3/4 of the vessel’s height). At this height, there is a triangular protrusion that directs the ascending materials towards the center of the vessel. The materials then fall freely back to the bottom of the vessel, achieving uniform mixing.

Extrusion:

The pre-mixed materials are fed into a compounding twin-screw extruder, where the twin-screws work collaboratively. The co-rotating intermeshing twin-screws realize multi-stage plasticization of materials through sectional temperature control (100-300℃) and shear field design. For example, the main feeding section uses large lead screw threads to transport the base materials, while in the kneading blocks area, a high shear rate of 500-1500 s⁻¹ is applied to completely break up the pigment agglomerates.
A multi-stage vacuum vent is set in the rear section of the extruder to effectively remove low molecular weight volatiles and avoid bubble defects in the finished products.
The twin-screw design ensures excellent homogenization and dispersion.

Strand Pelletizing:

The molten mixture is extruded through a die to form strands. These strands are then cooled, usually in a water bath, and cut into small pellets using a pelletizer.

Cooling and Drying:

The pellets are cooled and dried to remove any moisture, ensuring they are ready for packaging and storage.

Packaging:

The final masterbatch pellets are packed into bags or containers for shipment to manufacturers, who will use them to color or enhance the properties of their plastic products.

What is Compounding Twin Screw Extruder?

A compounding twin-screw extruder is a specialized machine used in the plastics, rubber, and chemical industries for mixing, dispersing, and compounding materials. It consists of two intermeshing, co-rotating or counter-rotating screws housed within a barrel. These screws transport and process materials by applying shear, heat, and pressure.
